Earth Unaware (The First Formic War):  Orson Scott Card

Victor didn't go to the airlock to see Alejandra leave the family forever, to marry into the Italian clan. He didn't trust himself to say good-bye to his best friend, not without revealing how close he had come to disgracing the family by falling in love with someone in his own asteroid-mining ship. The Italians were a four-ship operation, and their lead ship, a behemoth of a digger named Vesuvio, had been attached to El Cavador for a week, as the families traded goods and information. Victor liked the Italians. The men sang; the women laughed often; and the food was like nothing he had ever eaten, with colorful spices and creamy sauces and oddly shaped pasta noodles. Victor's own invention, an HVAC booster that could increase the central heating temperature on the Italians' ships by as much as eleven degrees, had been an immediate hit with the Italians.

Riordan's mission: travel to a newly settled world and investigate whether a primitive local species was once sentient - enough so to have built a lost civilization. However, arriving on site in the Delta Pavonis system, Caine discovers that the job he's been given is anything but secret or safe. With assassins and saboteurs dogging his every step, it's clear that someone doesn't want his mission to succeed. In the end, it takes the broad-based insights of an intelligence analyst and a matching instinct for intrigue to ferret out the truth: that humanity is neither alone in the cosmos nor safe.

Hauntings:  Ellen Datlow

The spookiest of specters inhabit this spine-tingling anthology - compiled by an acclaimed editor of the horror genre - that collects the most chilling ghost stories from the past 25 years. The human obsession with the mysteries of the afterlife is explored in these supernatural tales of haunted houses, lost souls, unexplained phenomena, and "good" neighbors. Neil Gaiman's "Closing Time" is a troubling tale recounted by an elderly man on a cold drizzly night in London while Joyce Carol Oates' "Haunted" is a chilling story of two young girls drawn to abandoned houses and what they find in one. Francis Wardwell is eager to inform readers that everything they think they know about ghosts is wrong in Peter Straub's "Hunger: An Introduction," and George R. R. Martin's "Remembering Melody" stresses the importance of keeping promises - no matter the consequences.

Murder on Olympus (Plato Jones):  Robert B. Warren

Reimaging the Greek Gods of Olympus and placing them on modern Earth, this urban fantasy novel focuses on Plato Jones, who, after a stint with the Olympic Bureau of Investigation, is through with the Gods and their political games. Against Plato's protests, he's drawn into a murder investigation where the murderer's targets are the Gods themselves. Plato has cracked some tough cases: exposing cheating spouses, capturing treasonous heretics, and hunting three-headed dogs, but this time he's in over his head. How can he solve a crime that's impossible to commit? And what chance does Plato - a mere mortal - have against something powerful enough to kill a God?

Treknology: Star Trek's Tech 300 Years Ahead of the Future:  Justin McLachlan

With its vision of a bold future, Star Trek has captivated millions for decades. It's ideas of transporters and warp drives, of androids and holodecks have penetrated the cultural imagination. Justin McLachlan, an award-winning journalist, explores the current state of our technology and what's waiting for us just on the horizon. With the help of experts in the fields of robotics, physics, artificial intelligence and more, he looks not just at the science behind Star Trek's technology, not just at our abilities and our challenges, but beyond the question of "Can we?" to also ask, "Should we?" How would humankind treat a race of androids? Would holodecks only isolate us in a world where human interaction doesn't exist? Can machines that learn ever be truly controlled? Should they be? These questions are more important now than ever, as the pace of technological innovation outstrips even the imaginations of Star Trek's writers. What McLachlan finds in Treknology, an entertaining and though-provoking read, is that much of the Star Trek's technology and the questions it poses for mankind is not just within our technological grasp, but much of it is already here - 300 years ahead of the future.

Hardcover Titles
Good-bye Robinson Crusoe and Other Stories:  John Varley

This stellar collection by John Varley contains eleven provocative, utterly distinctive stories and novellas. None of them are currently available in any other book. Some have been unavailable in any form for twenty-five years or more. The result is a publishing event that no admirer of Varley - or of first-rate imaginative fiction - can afford to miss. The bulk of these stories comprise what the author calls a 'Grand Tour of the Solar System,' moving from one thoroughly imagined setting to another with deceptive ease. 'The Funhouse Effect' is a tale of mystery, intrigue, and illusion that takes place on a mechanized comet moving toward the sun s corona. 'Retrograde Summer' is an account of gender reversals and family secrets set against the radically unstable backdrop of Mercury. 'Bagatelle' pits a recurring Varley character - Police Chief Anna-Louise Bach - against a living bomb that threatens to devastate Luna's Dresden City. Other stories range from Venus ('In the Bowl') to an underground 'disneyland' on Pluto ('Good-Bye, Robinson Crusoe') to the unexplored reaches of deep space ('The Black Hole Passes').

Magic Highways gathers sixteen of those early space adventures from that exciting first decade, spanning the years 1946 to 1956. The Fall of Arthur:  Tolkien, J. R. R.

The Fall of Arthur was one of several long narrative poems that he abandoned in that period. In this case he evidently began it in the earlier nineteen-thirties, and it was sufficiently advanced for him to send it to a very perceptive friend who read it with great enthusiasm at the end of 1934 and urgently pressed him 'You simply must finish it!' But in vain: he abandoned it, at some date unknown, though there is some evidence that it may have been in 1937, the year of the publication of The Hobbit and the first stirrings of The Lord of the Rings. Years later, in a letter of 1955, he said that 'he hoped to finish a long poem on The Fall of Arthur'; but that day never came. Associated with the text of the poem, however, are many manuscript pages: a great quantity of drafting and experimentation in verse, in which the strange evolution of the poem's structure is revealed, together with narrative synopses and very significant if tantalising notes. In these latter can be discerned clear if mysterious associations of the Arthurian conclusion with The Silmarillion, and the bitter ending of the love of Lancelot and Guinevere, which was never written.
